You’ve heard it, you’ve seen it, but are you practicing it? Weight loss is 30% exercise and 70% nutrition. For #TipThursday I am recommending that you track your food intake to see how much you are really consuming! We believe, and medical studies prove that the best way to lose weight and keep it off is have a healthy lifestyle that incorporates a fitness regime and to simply keep track of the foods you eat. Once you see what you are truly consuming, it gives you a clear vision of what you should and should not be eating. Quite often we under-estimate what we put in our bodies in a day (and eat much more than we actually NEED), but even though we don’t realize it our bodies do!
Weight loss comes down to quality of food and once the food choices are healthy in general, then it comes down to a simple equation. Calories in = calories out. In order to lose weight, more calories need to leave your body than enter it. And conversely, in order to gain weight, more calories need to be entering your body than leaving it.
That being said calories are simply a measure of energy. As important as it is to watch how many calories you are consuming, it is just as important to make sure those calories are made from the right nutrients. While you are tracking how many calories you are consuming, you can also track how many of those calories are coming from which macro nutrients. Then you can see if your carbohydrates, fat & protein ratios are on point. You will also be able to see the break down of your fiber, sugar, and vitamin in take so you can see if you have any nutritional deficiencies in your life.
There are so many ways to track your food intake. Medical studies show that keeping a food journal doubles your weight loss success! The easiest way we have found is to use MyFitnessPal. It is a free online calorie counter that you can even get an app for on your phone! They have a huge database, with over 5 million foods! You can also input your own foods and recipes so you can have an honest look at what you are putting in your body! Another great thing about MyFitnessPal is that you can add people you know as friends, like your trainer, so they can give you advice based on what you are really eating.
Seeing the numbers like this can often be an eye opener and will help you achieve better success in your weight loss. You don’t have to track your food for the rest of your life, we recommend that you track yourself honestly for a few weeks so you can see what you need to adjust and where you need to cut back. Then once you are on track and know what you need to feed yourself you can just eat mindfully and achieve success outside as well as inside the studio!
