When you get on an airplane and they go through the safety instructions, what do they say about the air mask?
“Should the cabin lose pressure, oxygen masks will drop from the overhead area. Please place the mask over your own mouth and nose before assisting others.”
Why is this so important?
If you don’t secure your own oxygen, you can’t be any help to anyone else!
I want you to use this as an analogy for your own life.
Are you burnt out?
Resentful towards those around you?
Irritable with your kids all the time?
There may be other things at play, but typically when we don’t take care of ourselves we end up unable to be the best we can to anyone around us.
Self care comes in a variety of ways. For some it can simply be going to bed on time and getting a full nights sleep!
For you it could be; a quiet bath, an hour enjoying your favourite TV show or book, partaking in an exercise class, getting a spa treatment, going for a walk in nature, savoring a healthy meal, etc. The list can go on and on, based on you and your needs!
But you may be reading that list and thinking ‘I don’t have time for that!’.. or ‘I don’t deserve to do that!’..
What we have to realize though is that taking time for ourselves is a necessity.
Self care isn’t selfish, its actually the furthest thing from it. Because when we take care of ourselves we can give back tenfold to others!
If you want to be able to be present, available, and enjoyable to those around you, self-care has to be a daily practice!
If you want to be able to help those around you, such as your children, reach their potential, you have to first allow yourself to be helped!
Put that oxygen mask on, YOU!
